The main event for the Museum of Moscow in 2024 was the exhibition ‘Muscovite: Women of the Soviet Capital in the 1920s–1930s.’ The time framework was chosen deliberately, as this period marked significant shifts and expansions in the social roles available to women, with the city-dwelling women undergoing daily transformations. The exhibition traced this journey through works of visual art from the first half of the 20th century.

The New Woman of that era was not merely part of the urban landscape, strolling through the streets — she was at the forefront of change and major undertakings. Who was she? The list is long: worker, revolutionary, actress, pilot, parachutist, metro builder, artist, writer, and engineer’s wife.

“The exhibition immerses visitors in the world of Muscovite women in the 1920s and ’30s, allowing them to see ‘living’ heroines with their hopes and aspirations, to explore their daily lives, and simultaneously understand how women of that time were perceived by those around them,” says Anna Trapkova, General Director of the Museum Association “Museum of Moscow.”

Ksenia Guseva and Nadezhda Plungyan, art historians and curators of the exhibition, selected about 2,000 exhibits from more than 30 Russian museums and private collections. The artists include Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Deineka, Ekaterina Zernova, Nadezhda Kashina, Alexander Labas, Aristarkh Lentulov, Alexander Tyshler, Konstantin Yuon, Petr Konchalovsky, Ilya Mashkov, and other prominent painters of the past century.
