Timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the movie ‘Brother’, this exhibition explored more than just Balabanov’s cult films starring Sergey Bodrov. Visitors were invited to take a look at his lesser-known works, unfinished scripts, and raw ideas that never reached the screen.
‘Find your flock and consider it’s done’, says a character in the movie titled ‘It Doesn’t Hurt Me’. This catchy line, mounted on a stylized road sign, greets visitors from afar as they enter the show.
Balabanov’s protagonists are often outsiders, people who don’t quite belong, struggling to uphold their values in a broken system. These misfits are also his brightest, most human characters.
The world they inhabit is bleak, dusty, grey, with occasional hints of pale pink or washed-out blue. These subtle colors only heighten the loneliness and the noirish mythic Russian atmosphere that surrounds them.
In Balabanov’s films, lighting plays a crucial role, enhancing the character development on screen. Inspired by his cinematic language, we based our lighting design on filmic principles: a cold, ashen light fills the exhibition space, evoking hopelessness and emotional distance. Warm, focused light was used sparingly, symbolizing the flickers of humanity and hope carried by his central characters.
